Job Title: Data Scientist
Type: Direct Hire
Salary: $120,000 – $122,000 + excellent benefit package including employer paid benefits and 401k match
A mission‑driven national non-profit organization is seeking a Data Scientist III to expand its data capabilities, strengthen ownership of mission‑critical systems, and support the organization’s ability to serve millions of members through durable, scalable data science infrastructure. This is a new headcount reporting directly to the Staff Data Scientist and plays a key role in evolving segmentation, modeling, and data workflows used across internal teams.
About the Role
The Data Scientist III will work at the intersection of data engineering, machine learning, and internal tooling. The team manages high‑volume pipelines that draw from multiple sources—including demographic and political opinion datasets—to power insights and personalization for a 9‑million‑member base with hundreds of thousands of weekly interactions. Election cycles create periods of intense data flow and urgent analytical demand, making durability, accuracy, and reliability essential. The role centers on maintaining and improving ETL pipelines, supporting core models, and building new internal tools that enable cross‑functional teams to work more efficiently.
What You’ll Do
- Maintain, improve, and scale ETL pipelines pulling from multiple datasets.
- Support segmentation and modeling pipelines, ensuring accuracy, performance, and long‑term reliability.
- Train, validate, refine, and monitor classification and regression models using sound evaluation methods.
- Build internal tools that apply machine learning, NLP, and AI techniques to interpret text‑based and behavioral data.
- Contribute across the full data lifecycle: ingestion, cleaning, modeling, deployment, monitoring, and documentation.
- Investigate data quality issues, edge cases, and inconsistencies; propose and implement durable fixes.
- Integrate third‑party APIs and support cross‑system interactions across analytics, research, engineering, and product teams.
- Support responsible AI practices by articulating assumptions, limitations, risks, and appropriate model use cases.
- Help identify high‑leverage opportunities where data science can improve outcomes and build tools enabling other teams to use insights safely and effectively.
Core Technical Skills
- Python (primary language) and SQL (joins, relationships, large datasets, Redshift/Postgres).
- Experience working with AWS environments and cloud deployment workflows.
- Machine learning fundamentals: regression, classification, evaluation (precision, recall), monitoring.
- ETL pipeline development and optimization.
- Familiarity with containerization (Docker), CI/CD, and modern development best practices.
- Comfort interacting with APIs; bonus if experienced integrating third‑party APIs into production pipelines.
- Bonus: light JavaScript or frontend experience to support internal tooling.
Soft Skills & Working Style
- Highly curious, proactive, and comfortable independently exploring analytical questions.
- Able to anticipate problems, think strategically, and communicate clearly across technical and non‑technical partners.
- Comfortable working in a nonprofit, mission‑driven environment and collaborating across distributed teams.
- Works well in fast‑moving, high‑demand cycles, particularly during data‑intense election periods.
